Our HANDLE sessions at Brighton Learning House help to jump-start your learning: deepening understanding, teaching skills and creating new habits that help you achieve your goals.
We help you understand underlying reasons behind your difficulties and teach activity programmes you can do at home regularly so you can continue to unlock your potential between sessions. This stabilises the learning and keeps it advancing.
HANDLE programmes are individually designed to suit each person whether a baby, a child or an adult. Most programmes take about 20-40 minutes daily and involve 5-12 Activities. Some people like to do all their activities in one block, and others prefer to spread them out through the day.
The activities involve things like massages, movement sequences and games- some may need simple equipment such as a hoop or a ball and others can be done anywhere. The Activities provide organised, repetitive, rhythmic movement and input that change the way the brain and body function.
Activity programmes are centred around the things that you, the client, want to go better, enabling you to reach your potential and take the struggle out of daily life.
In the course of doing a programme, many families also develop deeper connections with each other and learn how to interact in a way that supports a more relaxed and enjoyable way of living. Recommendations made can be far-reaching and parents or carers can expect a HANDLE programme to bring about changes in their own lives as well as their child’s. Individuals describe gaining deeper understanding of their issues which enables stress to be reduced and improves social, academic or working relationships.
Getting Started
A HANDLE programme begins with either an Assessment or a Screening. We collect information about how you are functioning by taking an in-depth history and through detailed, non-judgemental observation during the session. Depending on the client, some sessions may be entirely play-based and client-led, others may involve more structured tasks, always carried out with the permission and involvement of the client.
As sessions progress we share what we have been learning, make recommendations (such as nutritional advice or practical changes to the home or school environment), and teach your tailor-made programme of HANDLE Activities designed to address underlying issues that have been identified.
Screening Starter
These programmes begin with a Screening that lasts 40-60 minutes. After a break or on another day you come back for a 1-2 hour Presentation where your Screener will explain their findings and teach you a programme of daily activities specifically tailored to you.
Screenings are suitable for people aged 5 and upwards with mild to moderate difficulties. They are ideal for evaluating individuals or a group in a short period of time.
Assessment Starter
These programmes usually begin with 3 evaluation sessions and 2 Zoom follow-up calls, spread over a week or month. As they learn more about you or your child your Practitioner will explain their findings and teach you a programme of specifically tailored activities.
Assessments are suitable for anyone, of any age with any difficulties. They are ideal for people who want an in-depth understanding of more complex challenges.
If you’re not sure which route is best for you, you can begin with a simple Starter Pack which includes the first two appointments of an Assessment pack. From here you can go ahead with a full Assessment, or you may decide with Sean that NeuroMovement sessions are the best route forward for you.
Reviews: the heart of a programme
Screening and Assessment Starter Packs are followed by a six month Review pack to keep up with progress and changes. These sessions are the heart and powerhouse of the HANDLE programme. Review sessions can take place in person or online, usually every 4-6 weeks, and we can continue to support you between sessions if you need it. HANDLE programmes last for a minimum of 6 months but many clients continue for a year or longer, and some continue for many years.
